What is Hemp-Derived CBD?

What is CBD Oil? The compound CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is one of 85 cannabinoids extracted from the industrial hemp species called cannabis Sativa and is the second most abundant compound in hemp. The popular plant extract is consumed under the tongue sublingually in order to bypass the digestive system and liver metabolism resulting in a 98% absorption rate. The CBD oil quickly reaches the bloodstream, binding to receptors in the body and begins interacting to maintain homeostasis. CBD, a non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid, is believed to have an scientific effectiveness that benefit various ailments our bodies experiences in the world today.

Cannabis has two species, Hemp and Marijuana. Marijuana is known for its psychotropic properties from THC. Hemp is CBD rich in that it has the enzyme responsible for the production of CBD and whose psychotropic properties are nearly non existent. The beneficial properties of CBD are abundant throughout the body due to the Human Cannabinoid System. There is somewhat of a misconception or stigma surrounding CBD in that it is mistaken for marijuana. The psychoactive component in marijuana is called THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), the main mind altering chemical found in the cannabis (marijuana) plant. Hemp-Derived CBD does NOT contain psychoactive properties, meaning it does not produce feelings of euphoria, or in layman terms it does not get you buzzed or “high.” While marijuana can contain nearly 30% THC, hemp contains no more than 0.3% THC, meaning it will not alter a person’s mental state.

While there are thousands of scientific reports about the Endocannabinoid System in humans and animals, the majority of the population in the U.S. are unaware of the ECS in the body.  All throughout our lives schools have taught that the body has 11 major systems that keep humans alive. These systems include the skeletal, muscular, circulatory, integumentary nervous, respiratory, urinary, reproductive, digestive, endocrine and lymphatic system. Scientists discovered in the early 1990’s that we have an Endocannabinoid System, a network consisting of CB-1 and CB-2 receptors(a signaling system regulating biological functions) that is rooted throughout the human body. Knowing our bodies were created to be self sufficient led scientist searching for compounds made in the human body that act on these receptors. It was discovered that our body produces their own endogenous cannabinoids called Anandamide(The Bliss Molecule) found in the brain, and 2-AG working in conjunction with our CB-1 and CB-2 receptors within the central or peripheral nervous system. These receptors function to regulate and restore balance in our bodies, also known as Homeostasis. The ECS (Endocannabinoid System) plays an important role in the physiological system of maintaining human health affecting sleep, pain, appetite, memory, mood, and the biggest issue causing many health conditions, “Inflammation.”

CBD may benefit your health in various ways. The CBD Oil, of pure and high quality, can aid in several health issues. As the author of this article I can share with you that CBD oil has helped my family and many others. Consumers have reported various benefits concerning pain, inflammation, anxiety, sleep, focus, digestion, energy, mood and skin. CBD Oil promotes overall health and homeostasis of the body. Is it possible the body can have an ECS deficiency?  Yes,absolutely! The common cold, a headache, anxiety, insomnia and inflammation can be possible signs of an endocannabinoid deficiency. Our body is consistently working to maintain balance and homeostasis. The addition of CBD Oil acts in support of the Endocannabinoid System to enhance the process of receptor signaling and promote wellness.

Yes! Under the 2014 Farm Bill, CBD derived from Industrial Hemp that has less than 0.3% THC by dry weight is federally legal.  Furthermore, President Donald Trump signed off on the 2018 Farm Bill in December that legalizes Hemp at the federal level and included having no  restrictions on commercial activity.

While I cannot speak about safety for the CBD Industry as a whole, I can share several suggestions about what to look for when buying CBD Oil. First, research the brand before you buy. Extraction is a key factor that will determine the purity of the product. The soil where the Hemp crop is grown should be free of chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. The Subcritical CO2 Extraction method is a healthier choice than other potential solvents and “generally regarded as safe” by the FDA. Testing should be performed on the hemp oil to ensure accuracy in potency information and to check for contaminants like pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, and mold as well as cannabinoid content. Of course, make sure it is made in the USA!

Many hemp products sold in retail stores, grocery, drug stores and specialty shops, are most often made with hemp seed oil, which can contain fillers and only trace amounts of CBD. Hemp seed oil is exactly just that, oil from the seed. Pressed from the seed, the oil is good for skin and hair especially due to vitamin E and other minerals.

Full Spectrum oil–generally means that The CBD extracted from the whole hemp plant also contains additional cannabinoids that work synergistically for an “Entourage effect.”

Additives–watch out for additives and/or toxins, solvents and fillers in your oil.  These additions can dilute essential compounds of the CBD extract. Be sure to read the ingredients on the label! A good rule of thumb is only 2 ingredients….CBD extract and Hemp Seed oil (carrier oil). Some consumers prefer the mint flavor, just make sure all is organic.

Consider the price–When shopping for everyday items, it’s easy to compare price when clearly it is the same product, but an off brand. BUYER BEWARE, If you search “CBD near me”, various products might come up from oils, creams, edibles and it can be tempting to click on the cheapest prices, but stay aware of quality. Cutting corners can equate to cheaper pricing.

How the CBD Oil is made (Manufacturing)–CBD isolates are generally less expensive than whole plant extraction CBD and can be absent of essential cannabinoids. Extracting from the whole plant stalk will produce  Pure Full Spectrum oil as long as the extraction method used does not contain solvents. The most popular and FDA approved extraction method is the CO2 Extraction method. This process does not involve any solvents and produces a pure end product.

Testing and analysis of CBD Oil–Each batch of high quality CBD oil will be tested for potency, contaminants, pesticides, herbicides heavy metals, mold and cannabinoid content. Be advised to look for a lot number on the label, as well as the manufacturer/distributor. An FDA approved facility is your best bet! A reputable company can provide proof of stability testing and a Certificate of Analysis and Chromatography Test.

Does Cannabidiol (CBD) show up on a drug screen?

While CBD is considered to be undetectable in saliva or urine tests, it is possible in an instance that small trace amounts of THC may be detected. To be federally legal, the THC content must contain less than 0.3% of THC by volume as required by law. There are options for THC FREE CBD Oil, otherwise it is recommended to check with your employer.

It’s no surprise that within the last decade, consumers in the United States are becoming hungry for direction and guidance on the subject of diet and nutrition. Side effects from Rx prescription meds are endless causing more issues adding to the diagnosis. The phrase “Heal your body with natural whole foods” is trending. More people are choosing to explore essential oils, CBD Oil, and herbs such as Chamomile, Dandelion and Echinacea as options of natural alternatives to relieve chronic pain, address sleep disorders, rid anxiety, combat depression, counteract stress, increase energy, reduce inflammation, relieve joint pain, improve focus, and  prevent disease just to name a few.

Every year we vow to be diligent in practicing healthy habits. Now we have CBD (cannabidiol) Oil which according to science our bodies produce cannabinoids internally and CBD interacts with our CB-1 and CB-2 receptors to promote wellness. In the second half of 2018 the first prescription ever in US history containing CBD, a formulation of highly purified cannabidiol called Epidiolex is now FDA approved for the treatment of seizures. As of late December,  as a result of the 2018 Farm Bill, passed by Congress, the legalization of Industrial Hemp has paved the way for more consumers to feel confident in engaging in natural alternative practices.
